What are the benefits of using a server connection over a local connection?

Using NPrinting 17.4, I have troubles to find a clear answer to this question online: why should I choose a server connection (to a .qvw) over a local (universal path) connection?

Thanks in advance.

Connect to a QlikView server instead of using a local connection benefits are:

- better performances and stability

- section access is supported on server connections

- data are refreshed after a .qvw reload without the need to do a metadata reload

lech_miszkiewicz‌ I ping you in case you would to add some info.

Best Regards,

Ruggero

Hi Sem,

one advantage that spring to mind is portability. If, for some reason, your document path is changed, your direct path would break. With a server connection this should not happen.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your reply. If I'd change the path, than the path on the Qlik Server would break as well. And NPrinting still needs me to specify in which folder the .qvw is located, so I'm guessing this is not the right answer.

To answers your question

server connection: gets call via QVP protocol which is much faster

local connection: gets call via FTP protocol which is much slower

and tied to that is another important advantage: security.

A server connection uses all security and availability restrictions that you can imposes on a document by way of the QlikView Server.

A local connection starts QV Desktop in the background, which opens the file straightaway using File->Open. Not many standard security measures involved.

Thank you!

Can you explain a little about why this is faster? The .qvw's I've used so far aren't that large and I haven't noticed any difference in speed.

Maybe I didn't explain that so well. I meant if you change your folders on the server, for example if you decide to move your root folder, or userdocs folder, or whatever.

Well as Ruggero said i can add to it a lot:

Pros fro qvp connection are:

  • qvw is already preloaded on the server - it can be accessed faster
  • qvw is handled by QVS service (QlikView server) which means that it will manage memory consumption accordingly and drop some cached records if it runs out of the memory (as opposed to LOCAL connection which will drain all resources untill your server dies). This is extremly important in long term when you are running production environment.
  • I am 100% sure that running local connection will result in lack of resources at some point (Unless you are running 5 MB qvw on the server with 128 GB of RAM)
