Where Are The Log Files For SMTP in NPrinting 17.2

Hi,

We are having a few issues with NPrinting 17.2, one of which is emails taking a long time to arrive.  We are struggling to see progress of tasks running, and specifically want to see when NPrinting is talking to the SMTP server and comparing that to when the email comes through.

I've seen this section on logging:

https://help.qlik.com/en-US/nprinting/17.0/Content/AdministeringQVNprinting/Logging/Logging.htm

However, I've not seen anything in here about when emails are being fired off.

Does anyone know where these log files should go to?  ath‌ do you have any ideas on this?

Being able to see where the generation process any tasks are would also be a very big help - but that's a different thread...

We have 17.2 pointing to a Qlik Sense Server.

Cheers,

Steve

Re: Where Are The Log Files For SMTP in NPrinting 17.2

Steve,

  1. Report delivery is handled by NPrinting Server, so you would find anything about SMTP in the Server log files.
  2. For more verbosity in your log files, set them to debug mode (this won't impact performance in any significant way). Instructions here:

    https://help.qlik.com/en-US/nprinting/17.0/Content/Troubleshooting/Troubleshooting.htm
  3. I strongly recommend you download and install the newest version of NPrinting (17.2.1) which was released today. It has loads of stability and performance improvements.

Re: Where Are The Log Files For SMTP in NPrinting 17.2

Thanks for the speedy response Aran.

Will certainly look at turning on the more verbose logging and putting on the latest version.

Regarding 17.2.1, I can't see on the Downloads site documentation regarding upgrading.  Is it simply a case of running each of the three .exe files in the same order as the original install to apply over the top of a 17.2.0 installation?

Looking at the list of issues that have been resolved we have experienced quite a few of them - so am looking forward to getting this installed.

Steve,

  1. Upgrading from 17.2 is just a matter of running the setup files
  2. Glad that we've fixed issues you were facing
  3. Feedback about this version as always would be great

Re: Where Are The Log Files For SMTP in NPrinting 17.2

Hi Steve - a few things on this topic:

  1. The method for turning on detailed logging in version 17.2 and later has changed.  You must now remove html open and close tags at 2 specific points within the engine, webengine and scheduler config files.  Prior to 17.2 you would change "INFO" level syntax to "DEBUG" syntax.  See help documentation here. Troubleshooting ‒ Qlik NPrinting
  2. Always take a backup of the repository prior to upgrading in place as a safeguard restore point.
  3. Turn off all 5 NP services prior to running upgrade (Engine, Scheduler, Web Engine, Repository, RabbitMQ) and then install in same order as before (Server, Engine, Designer)
  4. Also, all logs have a standard delimited format and can easily be loaded into a QlikView/QlikSense app for analysis (sample QlikView doc attached).  The logs are auto-archived with number suffixes as the logs grow in size so you may need to load multiple files.

Kyle

Re: Where Are The Log Files For SMTP in NPrinting 17.2

Hi Kyle,

Thank you - that's very useful information.

Building a sense app to look in the log files is very high up on my to-do list - there seem to be an awful lot of entries that are not important making it hard to find the really important stuff.

Cheers,

Steve

Hey Steve,

have you come up with a Sense application to analyse NPrinting logs?

Many thanks,

Riccardo

Not as yet, but it is something that I can imagine I will have to do at some point - unless someone else has beaten me to it and posted their app online...
