We are excited to share news on the September 2018 release of Qlik Sense, and would like to highlight some of the key enhancements in this release.

Since the June 2018 Release, we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the value of Insight Advisor, and how it suggests the best analytics and insights to explore.  Qlik remains focused on Augmented Intelligence and the September 2018 Release expands the use of Insight Advisor to published Qlik Sense Apps, to encourage further data exploration across the enterprise.  This is only the beginning of how Qlik will reshape the analytics community with the power of our Cognitive Engine, with more to come around AI in future releases!

In addition, we are furthering our commitment to delivering ‘QlikView like’ features in Qlik Sense with our focus on Advanced Authoring.  The September 2018 release offers additional advanced authoring capabilities that enable customers to build sophisticated data layouts while improving the speed of application development through ease of use.  These include:

  • Better control over information density within the Qlik Sense client for devices that support touch and mouse input
  • Default bookmarks for setting initial selection state when applications are opened
  • The ability to turn off responsiveness of the client for custom sheet sizing
  • Expression Editor enhancements including direct links to help, restructured function categorization and improved search capabilities
  • Visualization control improvements including conditional show/hide in pivot tables and customizable master measures

We are excited to announce another high-value enhancement delivering a key customer requirement. The September 2018 Release offers the ability to move multiple apps from stream to stream which removes the previous limitations from the Qlik Management Console (QMC).  Further, we have made investments to improve performance and stability with upgrades to our open source front-end framework.

The September 2018 Release will also deliver enhanced mapping capabilities including a new Density Map Layer that is very useful when mapping data on a highly localized and detailed level.    The Density Map Layer is a multi-color gradient background where the color intensity depends on the weight and closeness of points.  This map layer is useful for mapping data such as: crime statistics, house values, etc.  The release does not stop there as we have made other general mapping improvements around additional controls and data inputs.

For value-added products, we’ve strengthened the capabilities of Qlik NPrinting around administration, expanded authoring, and improved security for report consumption.  For example, you can now import users/roles from an LDAP source and, if desired, you can substitute the TLS Cipher suite.  In addition, Qlik NPrinting now has session expiration log out, output of reports in .xlsm formats, and report level password protection.

We continue to expand connectivity with the addition of Microsoft Azure DB and Jira connectors, while also delivering enhanced security with LDAP authentication within the integrated connector to Presto. More to come later this month on additional SAP connectors!

And last, the September 2018 release addresses the mobile security requirements of large enterprise deployments, delivering full support for AirWatch EMM. As AirWatch is among the fastest growing EMM vendors, it is critical for Qlik in becoming a tier one vendor to integrate well with and support this platform!

The much-anticipated Qlik Associative Big Data Index is to be released later this month via a new Early Access Program (EAP).  Look out for more information in the coming days.

jdiaz‌ - if you have an auto calendar or another master calendar then you should be able to select "Today" in there as a field value and set a bookmark on that. Having a good calendar with usable shortcuts like that helps your end users not just the default bookmark functionality.

Of course, you can make a great calendar with shortcuts likethat at https://www.ometistoolkit.com/timeawarecalendar

Thats actually not correct, Jose Diaz. A formula can be used as a selection and if you create a (default) bookmark after that, the formula rather than the hits will be remembered. In your case =Max(Month) is a wrong thought. If you start with a "=" you have to provide a full formula including the field name on which you operate. Assuming that should work on a field "OrderMonth" then the selection would be "=OrderMonth=Max(OrderMonth)" ... your formla just returns a value with no comparision to the field, which results in all member of the field to be selected

Hello Lanevich - that link is for Qlik partners and customer only - if you are not one of those - you can download Qlik Sense Desktop  or register and login to Qlik Sense Cloud here: https://www.qlik.com/us/try-or-buy

Let us know how you do!

Hi Christof,

Thanks for your comment.  I stand corrected: it does work.

Thank you Alex.  We want to create a default bookmark for the last couple of years.  As mentioned by Christof, the expression that I used in my original posting was incorrect (but it wasn't the one we were actually trying to use, it was just an incorrect example - the correct version of what we wanted to do was something like "=MyYear>=$(=max(MyYear)-1)").

csw‌,

Sorry to bother you again with this, but I seem to be having problems creating the bookmark expression when I try to create the bookmark on a field derived by the autoCalendar, such as in the following expression:

=BUDAT.autoCalendar.Year>=$(=max(BUDAT.autoCalendar.Year)-1)

The expression works fine when I try to do the same with a regular field loaded from a table.  Any thoughts?

Something else is that if we define a Dimension for BUDAT.autoCalendar.Year, say MyYear, we can't refer to the Dimension name in the expression typed in the search box for a drop list for this Dimension: we have to use the fully derived name of the field.  But I guess that is a separate matter.

Cheers,

Try creating a flag from the backend.

You can create a small snowflake table that associates with your year in the Fact table.

Hi Jose. Making a Year-1 is a bit more tricky since the value behind the *.autoCalendar.Year is a Dual() value where the numeric part is the Jan-1st of the Year: 2018 is infact 43101, 2017 is 42736 ... so the formula may work fine in a set analysis, where the textual part is relevant, but for a number operation to match, your Max(*.autoCalendar.Year)-1 returns the 31-Dec of the prev year, not the Jan 1-st which would be needed. As suggested by other users here, I would calculate a simple flag in the script that gets you the last two years. If you still want to do this with formula in the frontend it would be:

=SomeDate.autoCalendar.Year>=$(=Num(AddMonths(Max(SomeDate.autoCalendar.Year),-12)))

Hi, good afternoon.

I wanted to ask why Qlik Sense Desktop does not have the possibility of always keeping a selected value in the filter panel, when in the version of Qlik Sense Cloud it is possible.

Great question Martin.   The reason is Qlik Sense Cloud is on continuous release while Qlik Sense Desktop is on a scheduled release (5 times a year).  So cloud gets the features as soon as they are completed by our development team and desktop gets the features in the next release.  So this capability will appear in the November release of Qlik Sense.

You may be asking, "but if the capability is available in Sept in cloud why is it not in the Sept release of Qlik Sense?".  The reason is we have to draw a line somewhere in the development process and say everything up to this point will go into the next release - for the Sept release that happen in August.  Then software needs to be packaged up, run through the various quality step, documented etc. before release.  In parallel, our development team continues working on new capabilities and release them to cloud as soon as they are ready.

This is exactly what happened in this case.  The select single value capability was not ready for Sept release cut-off but was ready soon after.

Josh, thank you very much for your response. It has been very clear. I will wait for the November version to have this functionality.

Hi Vishnu,

These items are part of the Qlik Sense Advanced Authoring plan, which consists of a set of capabilities to better support developers when creating guided analytics application in Qlik Sense.

The ones you described at placed high on the prioritization list and we expect to have something out in the next six months.

Caique

Caique,

Thanks for the info. Good to know that these are on priority. Without user inputs, it's very difficult to do "What If?" analysis and believe me or not, we've bled a few clients to Tableau because of this.

On another note,

I have seen that Alternate States has been released today on Qlik Cloud and I think I found a bug. The chart suggestions toggle seems to have a conflict with inherited states. I noticed this on a KPI box. Just an FYI.

Is the update exe for Qlik Sense server going to be added soon? It doesn't appear on the downloads page with the fresh installers.

Hi guys, I've recently discovered that you cannot insert inside a table an image in native Qlik Sense, you have to do it via qstable extension. The point here is that if we'd like to send a report with images we cannot do it because NPrinting doesn't allow extensions.

Is in your roadmap to add images natively soon?

Regards, Marcel.

Hi Chak (edited)- I updated to Sept 2018 by executing the installer and clicking upgrade - is that not the case for you?

Hi Marcel - this is something in discussion, but not at the top of the priority list. I will submit this to our idealtion system.

(edited) - I checked the system and there are cases for this feature, I have up-voted the idea on your behalf and made reference to this thread.

Thanks Michael, the point here is that there are another worse and cheaper tools that still got that and we cannot do an article report with photos with our powerful tool. Hope we can get it soon.

Hi Michael,

Apologies I didn't l know it had merged. I was following the documentation for the April 2018 release as that's what I'm updating from and it said there should be an update exe:

https://help.qlik.com/en-US/sense/April2018/Subsystems/PlanningQlikSenseDeployments/Content/Deployme...

Whilst I'm here, it says to stop Qlik Services but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this officially. Usually it's via the services manager in Windows but I'm not sure if those sudden kills and might break something.

Hi Chak - hmm let me check, I am not familiar with and update.exe file - btw restarting service should not break anything - just be sure to stop and restart all of them and clear your browser's cache.

chakleung The update.exe is only available when going applying a patch for the same release of Qlik Sense. e.g. going from June 2018 to June 2018 Patch 1. For major releases you have run the full setup program e.g. going from April 2018 to September 2018.

Hello  Michael,

Actually September version has a great features, we have setup it, but it is very very slow before we were working on Qlik Sense 3.0, and there is no comparison between two versions regarding to the Response, also the June version has the same issue but not  in April version

Please advise.

Thanks,

Salah

Hello Salah,

could you be a bit more specific where you see performance issues ? Are you talking about the performance in an App while a user is making selections ? What I would ask you to do, is to open a support ticket because we would definitely have to take a look into your log files and doing a proper analysis of what might cause the issue your are seeing here. And did you run the upgrade straight from QS 3.0 to QS September 2018 ?

Thomas

Hello Thomas,

I have uninstall 3.0 then install the latest version. I install April version before on test server, and it was more fast on the response to the users, but when I install September version on our production server the response to users is very slow, when we open any application it takes about 30 seconds to show sheets, also on the selections, so we  refresh the page multiple times.

Now our organization make a comparison between Power BI  and Qlik Sense because of this performance issue.

Salah

Hello Salah,

that is for sure not the regular behavior within Qlik Sense Enterprise September 2018. There must be something wrong within the deployment which we are happy to help you with. What you are describing here is definitely something we would have to drive through our support organisation as it would require us to take a look into some log files and even having a look into your environment.

Do you know how to create a support ticket via the customer portal ? This is where you will see the link which takes you to the portal: https://www.qlik.com/us/services/support

Please let us know if you need any further assistance to help you.

Best regards,

Thomas
