Can Qlik Sense use measure description for a tooltip?

In our QlikView projects we used to create both labels and comments for all expressions.

It was especially impoprtant for straight tables and pivots - labels with consise titles were used as column headers, and commens with more full info about KPI could be immediately seen in a column header tootlip.

Qlik Sense measures have similiar pair of attributes - title and description, but I cannot find where I can activate such behaviour.

For example when I point the mouse to `On Time Delivery` column header in sample `Executive dashboard` application, I would like to see full description of a measure: `The percentage of orders with a late shipment.` instead of repetition of same column header in tooltip.

Hi Vadim,

As of now we cannot edit the tooltips in QlikSense. What you have mentioned is a very good point and hopefully we have this functionality soon.

Thank you for answer.

Do you have some info about that? I can not find any discussion whatsoever regarding that feature in Qlik Sense

Hi Vadim,

Yes, there is no such discussion going on. I am sure the development team must have already had a look at this discussion.

We can infact achieve the same functionality by developing an extension for your requirement even now.

That's interesting. I would definitely make such an extension would it be possible to extend standard qlik sense widgets.

But as I understand it there is no way to do such things. Standard Qlik Sense widgets are closed sourced.

Do you have some example of extension that extends behaviour of standard Qlik Sense widget? I would be very interesting in avaliable technics for such things.

Or your expression `we can in fact achive the same functionality` presupposes that `we` for starters should implement full scale replica of standard Qlik Sense Straight Table and Pivot Table, and after that tweak some of their behaviour?

It would be not a small task in my opinion and I'm not at all surprised that nobody made that before.

I don't think we can enhance any Standard QlikSense charts or Widgets. i had a similar requirement where I needed a tooltip for the entire sheet. So I happened to develop one like this :

In your case, a new table extension should be built or instead it would be easier if you duplicate any of the table extensions available on Qlik branch and enhance it to fit your requirement.

Hope this helps!

Thank you. At least I understand your proposition. That basically was the option that I described as unrealistical in my opinion: to reimplement base Qlik Sense widgets from scratch

Hi Vadim,

Please check the thread below, you'll get some tip on it:

Custom pop-up message at charts

Thank you, good thread.

But I do not think that modal dialog which pops-up on click at `help` button is substitute for proper tooltip.

That's nice by itself (and actually not so rarely used in QlikView projects too) but it solve another problem.

Tooltip is not a newly invented GUI concept. I believe it is well known and has its own features and rules.

As far as I know normally tooltip do not repeat verbatim display text of widget that it describe. You do not see tooltips `OK` and `Cancel` on `OK` and `Cancel` buttons in modal dialogs.

Tooltip on column header which repeat verbatim header display text can be justified if column width is fixed and column header cannot be shown fully within of that width. That was possible scenario in QlikView for example.

In QlikSense columns have no fixed width I believe, so column titles are not normally clipped. In that scenario repetitive tooltips looks plain wrong from GUI perspective in my opinion.

Have any more recent versions of Sense added functionality for this?
