Analyzer/Professional licence allocation

Hi everyone,

Just had a question - possibly Qlik is the only one who can answer it but figured would ask here as it may benefit others.

We have a client on the new licencing model and running April 2018.

Let's say they have 5 professional licences and 5 analyzer licences.

If we have a user, say 'John', and we allocate him an analyser token, and he logs in, the token is consumed and we have to wait 7 days to reallocate it - just like the old model....

However,  if we decide we want him to have full rights and allocate him a professional licence to do so, and he logs in, an additional token (professional) is consumed.

I would have thought if a user is allocated a professional token, the 'analyzer' token associated with that user (if there is one) would be removed automatically - however this is not the case... the user now appears in both the Professional allocations list and the Analyzer allocation list (which notes a different last used date)

Essentially, because we now want John to have a professional token, we have 1 less Analyzer and need to wait for 7 days until we can re assign the analyzer licence to a different user.

I would expect that if a user appears in both allocation lists, the quarantine period should not apply for the lesser 'level' Analyzer licence if the user has an associated consumed Professional token - I always believed the quarantine mechanism was designed so that a user doesn't just purchase a single licence and allocate 'on the fly' to a bunch of different users

In summary, a user has an analyzer token, and we want to give them a professional token instead (an 'upgrade') the user should be moved from the Analyzer allocation pool to the Professional allocation pool. If this isn't reasonable, the system should not let the admin essentially assign 2 tokens to a single user and not allow 1 of these tokens to be deallocated without a quarantine period

Thoughts please?

Hi Lachlan,

Agreed, I would also expect a move from analyser to pro, however looks like at the moment the allocation isn't designed this way.

You got my vote!

I totally aggree with you.

It even gets worse: I have a customer that has (at the moment) too many Professional and not enough Analyzer tokens. It is more or less impossible to explain why he is not allowed to use the expensive professional tokens as 'cheap' analyzer tokens. Instead he has to buy more analyzer tokens while he has unused expensive professional tokens.

Why would he have to buy more Analyzer licenses when you have free Professional licenses?
From what I know there is nothing an Analyzer can do that a Professional can't.
Only problem would be if you don't want those users to have access to everything a Professional license allows.

That's exactly it. They need some priviliged Professional users, but do not want to offer these features to each of their employees.

Hi! You could write some security rules to "reduce" the rights to a professional token user and it will look like an analyzer token user!

Hi Emma,

technically you are right. This will work, but there are two disadvantages from my point of view

1) Creating new Security Rules always have a certain amount of risk to grant the wrong access and therefore need to be tested intensiveley. Furthermore the rules have to be transported to all your systems if you are running more than one server. (Dev, Prod, etc.)

2) Furthermore if you do not want to cut down ALL your Professional licenses, but only want to limit some of them you have to add an extra custom property and your security rules become even more complex. In the end this leads to the fact, that "real" Analyzer users are assigned in the Licence Management section of the QMC while "virtual" Analyzer users have to be set up in the Professional Section of the License Managament. Additionally you have to set the correct Custom Property at the user section of QMC. A "real" Professional user has to be configured not only in the Professional Licence Management Section of the QMC but needs additional setting in the user settings to set the correct custom property value.

All the best

Oliver
