Why can't Qlik Sense Desktop be installed on Server 2012?

Hello,

My company currently has QlikView 11.2 and we want to evaluate if we want to use Qlik Sense.  I stood up a Windows 2012 Test server and installed Qlik_Sense_x64setup.exe as a single node.  My company only has x86 workstations so we were going to install Qlik Sense Desktop on this server as well so that a few of our Developers could login and try it out.  However, when attempting to install Qlik_Sense_Desktop_x64setup.exe it gives a message:

Invalid operating system: This version of Qlik Sense Desktop cannot be installed on a Windows Server operating systems.  Please install the full version of Qlik Sense instead.

Does this mean that all of the functionality in Qlik Sense Desktop can be used from the browser in Qlik Sense Hub?  Will our developers not be missing out on anything from not being able to use Qlik Sense Desktop? (as we do not have any x64 Workstations that they can use)

If the functionality is not the same does anyone know of a workaround to get it installed on Server 2012?

Thank you

Hi Ben,

If you want to install Qlik Sense on a Windows Server you should go with the non Desktop version because the development is server-side with Qlik Sense (server), which means the developers can use a web browser from a 32bit linux computer and create Qlik Sense apps from their browser, without needing to use their hardware.

If one of your developers wanted to try out Qlik Sense and install the Desktop version, they will need a Windows 7 and up 64 bit edition computer. Also, in this case, the developer would use his local resources to work.

Answering to your questions:

- Does this mean that all of the functionality in Qlik Sense Desktop can be used from the browser in Qlik Sense Hub?

The functionality is the same (except the drag&drop files into the app to load them in the app. As of now, you have to use the script).

- Will our developers not be missing out on anything from not being able to use Qlik Sense Desktop? (as we do not have any x64 Workstations that they can use)

Then you need a Qlik Sense (server) version for your developers to be able to create Qlik Sense apps.

- If the functionality is not the same does anyone know of a workaround to get it installed on Server 2012?

You can't install Qlik Sense Desktop on a Windows Server edition.

Hope it helps.

Hi Ben,

It's correct that you can develop apps thru the hub with the same experience as using the Desktop client. One thing that you might miss is offline development, but otherwise is the desktop - server development equal.

Read more about how to get started in the online help:

Thank you Fredrik.  Is there a document that outlines that performing all development from within the Qlik Sense Hub is the same feature wise as developing from within Qlik Sense Desktop?  I just want to pass that information on to the developers in case they have any fears that they won't be able to do all of the same things.

Thank you
