Custom directory to pull from web service

Hi,

Is it possible to incorporate web service as the user provider for DSC?

As a SaaS provider we're looking into shifting our user database to secured  external machine. Possible solution would be to  use web-service (SOAP, WSE or HTTP).but...Is that even possible? Is there also possibility to control publisher Section Access using API?

Any other idea's are most welcome.
