Advantages

  • show each data category in a frequency distribution
  • display relative numbers or proportions of multiple categories
  • summarize a large data set in visual form
  • clarify trends better than do tables
  • estimate key values at a glance
  • permit a visual check of the accuracy and reasonableness of calculations
  • be easily understood due to widespread use in business and the media

Disadvantages

  • require additional explanation
  • be easily manipulated to yield false impressions
  • fail to reveal key assumptions, causes, effects, or patterns

Sounds like interview question...

When comparing a set of items side by side to show the quantitative behaviors, utilize bar charts.

Bar charts are classic diagrams that usually give a good picture of the data. Their main problem is that when there are many bars, labeling becomes problematic. Therefore, it is recommended to use a scroll-bar in the chart to display the first "n" bars. It is critical to sort by Y-value in that case.

They also imply that the data is discrete; if your data is something that is plausibly continuously changing over time, for instance, you might consider a line graph instead.
