Hi,
Can Anyone can help me to understand about CAL
1. What are the different kinds of CALs?
2. Whar are the difference between them?
3. In what scenario they can be used?
If any help thanks in advance.

Hi,
CAL’s (Client Access License)
Document CAL: allows one user to open one QlikView document.
Session CAL:
• allows one user on one computer to access QlikView documents.
• Anonymous users are allowed.
• Minimum Session time is set to 15 minutes.
Usage CAL:
• A Usage CAL gives the End User the right to initiate one session (open a single document) per
running 28-day period.
• The session may last a maximum of one hour.
• No identification of the client user is necessary.
• Most common deployment scenario: in combination with Session CALs, where there are spikes in
the number of simultaneous QlikView Server logins.
Named CAL:
• Access is based on user identity and valid for all documents on the server, that is any number of concurrent sessions from one user on one machine data time is allowed.
Hi guys can anyone explain me in short and sweet way about the CALs.
Please
Thanks
Harshitha

Hi Harshitha,

Re: Re: How to add CALs to QlikView Server?
From the documentation:
Document CAL
A Document CAL allows one user to open one QlikView document. The license is perpetual and will allow the user to open a (but not "the") single document. When a user opens a QlikView Document and consumes a Document CAL the user will be stored against the QlikView Document. The combination of a user would be stored in QlikView Server like Named users (server PGO files) but associated with a Document name instead of the "full server".
Named User CAL
A Named User CAL is mandatory when deploying a QlikView Server (SBE or EE) solution. A Named User CAL (an identified user on a server) has access based on user identity and is valid for all documents on the server, therefore any number of concurrent sessions from one user on one machine at any time is allowed.
Session CAL
This license allows one user on one computer to access QlikView documents. This means any number of concurrent sessions from one user on one machine with the same client (e.g. AJAX, IE Plugin, etc) at a time is allowed. Anonymous users are allowed, no identification of the client users is necessary. Minimum Session time is set to 15 minutes.
Usage CAL
Another way to handle a large community of non-frequent users of QlikView documents would be the use of Usage CALs. A Usage CAL gives the End User the right to initiate one session (open a single document) per running 28-day period. The session may last a maximum of one hour. Any activity after the first hour has expired will count as a new session (without visible interruption).
Can you tell me the differentiation and the scenario were they can be used in little more detail.
Thanks
Harshitha

Hi,
Go through these links, its very helpful to You........
Hi Read this:
What is a CAL
A QlikView license is referred to as a Client Access License (commonly called as CAL). To access
the Qlikview Dashboards deployed in Qlikview Server, users need a Client Access License (CAL). The
CALs are purchased with Qlikview Server and tied to the Qlikview Server Serial Number. Users
(Developers) can work with the Qlikview documents by leasing a license from the Server.
Types of CALs
Qlikview offers different license types depending on the usage by the users. Following are the
CAL types available in Qlikview
o Named CAL
o Document CAL
o Session CAL
o Usage CAL
Named CAL
A Named CAL is assigned to a User who can access unlimited Qlikview documents deployed in
one Qlikview Server. A Named CAL can be transferred to another user, but it takes 24 Hours quarantine
before the Named CAL to be transferred to another user. There is no time limit for the user to access
the Dashboard.
Named User CAL is used as a dedicated user license, means a user has the privilege to access as
many documents as he/she likes. This license can also be used for the local QlikView Desktop client for
development of applications by leasing the license from Server. This is highest form of license.
Named CALs are generally used in the following scenarios
o Is used for users within an organization that need dedicated access to QlikView.
o For QlikView Developers, Power Users, and sometimes Executive level Managers who
needs access to all the Dashboards.
Leasing license from QVS
License leasing was introduced in version 9 for Qlikview Server environments. This ensures that
a single license key could be issues to Customers for QVS which included the configurations for all
associated users, including offline developers. Licenses lease allows Developers to have access to server
documents to have a separate Local License key and a CAL on the server by combining the two into a
single Named CAL with License leasing.
Developers can now connect to QVS to lease their local license which offers offline development
capabilities for 30 days, after which they have to connect again to renew their lease. A lease is
prolonged for 30 days each time a user connects to the server. Updating a Leased License is done
automatically in the background, provided that QlikView can connect to a QlikView Server where you
have a Named CAL. It can also be done manually by opening a file on the server. A successful license
Document CAL
A Document CAL allows one user to open one Qlikview Dashboard deployed in Qlikview Server.
The license is perpetual and will allow the user to open a single document into perpetuity. If User wants
to access multiple Dashboards then multiple Document CALs (One for each Dashboard) need to be
assigned. A Document CAL can be transferred to another user, but it takes 24 Hours quarantine before
the transfer.
Document CALs are generally used in the following scenarios
o Commonly for organizations that have QlikView deployed departmentally and users
within each department only need access to specific QlikView documents
o Very flexible – DOC CAL’s allow for many combinations
o Very Cost-effective way to expand QlikView usage departmentally
o Include users within departments that ONLY need access to applications specific to their
departmental responsibilities
Session CAL
A Session CAL allows any user, identified or anonymous/unidentified user to access Qlikview
Dashboards deployed in the Server for a minimum period of 15 minutes. This type CAL is not tied to
User or a machine, and it serves in First Come First Serve basis. For Session CALs each client (Browser) is
referred to as unique instance (for example, the Ajax Client, Qlikview Desktop, or IE Plugin) on the user’s
machine. The Sessions that end in less that 15 minutes is freed after the 15th minute. There is no
maximum session length, but this can be configured in Qlikview Server.
Session CALs are generally used in the following scenarios
o Commonly deployed for organizations that have a larger user base and are looking for a
cost-effective way to deploy QlikView
o Similar to concurrent licensing but is a 1:1 ratio between CAL and documents.
o Deployed for frequent QlikView users who don’t need dedicated access
o Include Business Analysts and Mid-Management
Usage CAL
A Usage CAL allows any user to access one Qlikview Dashboard deployed in Qlikview Server
from one client for a period of 60 minutes per 28-day period. If a user exceeds the 60 minute time
limitation, the user will have consumed two Usage CALs without any warning being given to the user.
The Usage CALs is refreshed for every 28 days.
The Usage CAL is designed to accomodate overflow usage during peak times. It is not tied to a
User or Machine.
Session CALs are generally used in the following scenarios
o Commonly deployed within organizations to handle overflow users during peak usage times
o Very cost-effective for large organizations that have many casual users (i.e. viewing
month-end reports)
