Control over filters

When I select a field in one tab, the selections become effective for all the tabs. Is it possible to override this default behavior?

In QlikView your selections always apply to all tabs in the application.

If you are using version 9 or later, you can setup an action to clear all of your selections when you enter or leave a tab.

To do this, go into Settings > Sheet Properties > Triggers...

Here you can Add Actions when you activate or leave a sheet. Add the action "Clear All", which can be found under the type "Selection".
