Data loading changes data in column to "?"

I have a strange situation. I am loading 2 tables with 1 common key. For some reason in the 2nd table loaded from an .xlsx file the key gets changed to "?" after I load. This only happens when that column is picked up by Qlikview as being a key to link the 2 tables.

Any advise on what may be happening here?

I used a .csv format and that fixed it. Why wouldn't the .xlsx file work????

the ? tells you that the key has different format, no match.

it would be helpful if you could upload the actual excel file and the relevant section from your load script.
