Field.SearchFor how do I use the output?

I'm trying to create trigger that will take one selection, and apply it to the other selection.

To make a long story short, I could really use the functionality of the Field.SearchFor method (I've found another more brute-force approach involving a comparison of Selected values against Excluded values).

Unfortunately, the SearchFor method only returns an array of "internal element numbers". I have not been able to find any other API method that consumes an internal element number. My suspicion is that this method is used internally, but somehow it got exposed externally.

Has anyone successfully be able to use the SearchFor method and actually examine the returned values?
