My company asked me to join QlikView team as they need to create resource in this sector. They are also give me some time to learn Qlik. But now I am very much confused about my career path what should I do ??? If I decide to stick with QlikView for long time what is the benefit?? and what should I learn to build good basement at this huge platform (BI) ??

By getting your valuable suggestion/opinion I may decide my future career-life.

Hello Murad,

If your company is paying you to learn new skills, why would you decline? It is my experience that something that seems pointless to learn today, may come in handy just a few months or a few years later. At any given time, you are the captain of your (career)ship. But also at any given time, you need to keep that ship floating and attractive to employers. This can be done amongst others by adding new skills or maintaining others.

What's the worst that can happen? You don't like Qlikview (most unlikely), or the direction your career goes? Then make it known to the management and/or act upon it. At least, you've learned quite some things, and maybe can recover that or use it to learn another scripting language that suits you better.

However, if your heart is completely somewhere else (e.g. you want to become a vet), then quit now and follow that other dream.

Dear Johan,

Thank you for your nice explanation.

Actually since last four weeks I have tried QlikView and made some small application with some example data. Already I am starting to like the Qlik. As I know there are three types of working domain in QlikView (Designer, Developer, Administration). I have assigned as a designer first by my senior. But I have intention to be a developer gradually. For this purpose Now I am planning to complete "Oracle SQL Developer Course"  for building my confidence(no intention to be oracle developer).

Am I on the right plan ??? or have you any better suggestion ??? Please let me know ...

Hello Murad,

There are courses offered by Qlik that will learn you the basics of Design & Development in about a week. I've started of with scripting (development), and I'm now gradually discovering more on both the administration and the design part. I guess startins at design is equally well. In case of issues, I rather go back to the source, and tend to create there the variable(s) I need. You may learn first how to solve it in the presentation layer :-).

What I'd recommend, is to read and practice through the 'Qlikview 11 for developers' book. I also used the 'Cookbook' for some issues. And the rest is up to a lot of practice. And if you get stuck, consult this community platform. It is a source of both solutions and energy 🙂

(don't know how to react on the Oracle course. I'm told QV-scripting is close to SQL, so it may be a help, but it could easily disturb as well, since not all is similar. Maybe someone else on the forum an help you with that? )
