$Info field

I am trying to find out what the system field $Info does or means.

I found some limited information about it in the help: "If info tables have been included in the document, their names will be displayed here."

... but what are "info tables"?

Does anyone have an example of or a better explanation what the $Info field does or what "Info tables" are (and how I would get / use them)?
