Why would these two expressions inside of a resident table cause an "invalid expression error"

SUM(UnitsInvoiced) AS SHIPTotalUnits,
SUM($$Invoiced) AS SHIPInvoicedDollars,

[disqr_rm]

Try putting square brackets around: SUM([$$Invoiced])

Otherwise, please post complete query. Are you specifying GROUP BY correctly?
