QlikView Publisher

Hi Everyone,

Could you please help me understand few basic things about QlikView server and QlikView publisher in plain english.

Do I need QlikView Publisher (compulsory) to use QlikView Server ? What is the function of QlikView publisher in plain simple english? Tableau dont have Publisher. It only has server. Does that mean QlikView server is not sufficient to share the reports to end users or does that mean  QlikView Publisher has some unique features not found in any other BI tools like Tableau server.

Thanks in advance !!!

Anjana

Hi Anjana,

Let me clarify some things:

Do I need QlikView Publisher (compulsory) to use QlikView Server ?

No.

What is the function of QlikView publisher in plain simple english?

It allows advanced distribution scenarios. For example, if you have a huge sales qvw file but each user has only access to a section of the data,  it can create individual qvw files for each user, resulting in smaller (and faster) QlikView files. This process is transparent for the user.

Without Publisher you still can publish documents, manage users, manage reload tasks.

Publisher makes sense for companies with many users and documents. From a certain point, managing lot of users with different access rights over a lot of documents becomes a nightmare.

HI,

Qlikview Publisher is used to publish/reload and distribute the dashboards at the scheduled time.

Qlikview Server receives the request from users and gives the response.

In Qlikview 11 both Publisher and Server are merged together.

Please check for Qlikview Server Reference Manual 11 for detailed information.

Regards,

Jagan.

Which version of QV are you planning to use in your projects? EndUsers are accessing the Qlikview reports from a web portal named Accesspoint for which everything is hosted by QV Server & services.

QlikView is also known as a snapshot based tool that means it connects to the Data source to pull the data on specific schedule. It does not maintain an open connection to the Database all the time.

QlikView basic workflow is like below:

1. Developers create the content of the Dashboard saved as a QVW file.

2. During development developers will connect to the External Data sources from their local system. This is required to load the fresh data from data sources.

3. Once the content is ready it needs to be copied into a File Server. Here comes the Publisher's role.

4. Publisher is a server that takes care of updating the QVW with fresh data. Publisher can open the QVW created by the developer from the File Server and executes the data load script. The schedule of data reload is defined in a Task created for Publisher.

5. Apart from just loading the data from Data Sources to the QVW file the publisher also takes care of Authorization and many more responsibilities. The developer creates Task for the Publisher using a management console known as QMC.

6. Other than Publisher in QlikView there are two other servers available Application Server (serves the content to the end user, application server uses it memory (RAM) to hold the QVW requested by the end user.) and Web server (hosts the QVW files in a thumbnail view or list view for the end users on a web app known as Access Point and also delegates the end users request to App server)

Hi,

Like Qlikview Desktop you cannot work with publisher and server without license.

In realtime source data changes, to reflect this changes in dashboard it should be reloaded(scheduled to reload) hourly/daily depends on your requirement.

Hope this helps you.

Jagan.

Thanks a ton Sudeep,

Now I understand the process and role of Publisher .

So, As a developer I need to have a publisher license without which I wont be able to connect with server. So, I need to have a desktop(which is free) and a publisher(COMPULSORY) and a server license to share my reports to other end users.

Am I correct in my above statement? If not kindly guide me?

Yes, without Publisher, you have normal reload tasks which can be scheduled.

But beware! It's a different setup with Publisher than without. If you have the QlikView Server configured with Publisher, disabling the Publisher will lead to reconfiguration of the Server.
