Hi,
I have a chart that currently lives in Excel that I'm using to quickly show what phase a project is in as shown above. All it does is uses conditional formatting to highlight the cell corresponding to project phase number shown in the white box. I'm trying to create something like this in Qlikview, but am not sure what I would use to do so. Any suggestions?

I would try a pivot table (as a cross table) with Project as first dimension and Project stage as second dimension. Then you can use Only(ProjectStage) as expression and add a conditional expression background color on that.
