Macros should be applied as the least measure within qlik if really no other ways could be found within the inbuilt features - please see for it: Macros are Bad. Nevertheless if you want to play with it you should take a look on the APIGuide.qvw (within your install-folders by automation) which provides a lot of examples and a good view how the object-model is designed.

The above mentioned APIGuide is the best source to see wat is possible and how could it be done. If you searched here in the community for macros you will find a lot of postings, for example: Useful Qlikview Macros.
