Send to Excel is dangerous and failure of Qlikview !!!

First my gripe with Qlikview, then my question:

In my opinion the "Send to Excel" option is dangerous - it allows creation of a randomly named excel files which are "dumped" in a temp folder on your computer - by clicking this option the user has no idea where this file has been saved or that it has been given a random (meaningless) name.  I believe this is a failure of, what is otherwise a very good product !  If it were to put the data into a temporary file in an unsaved state fine!  Which is how other systems we use function so don't see why Qlikview can't do this!!

In our use of Qlikview we provide various dashboards showing data analysis/KPIs etc. with some info in the dashboards backed up by info in data-tables, summarising the information pulled from our source SQL database application.  At times there is legitimate reason to want to take the data from the tables into excel for a different type of interrogation etc.  So I am not against the idea of users been able to "export" data from the tables in Qlikview.

I fact I'd be happy to give them the "export" option as this leaves responsibility on the user to choose file format (so they can choose Excel format) and makes them save the file in a location of their choosing, so there is a bit more thought and ownership of what they are doing.  Or if it were to create an unsaved temporary file!

But just randomly "dumping" out files which are permanently saved on your computer via the "send to Excel" option is wrong (my opinion!!!)

I can see how you'd disable both in Settings > doc properties > security > untick allow export! I've looked, search forums etc but can not find a solution that allows "Export" but not "send to Excel".

If there is one great, so does anyone know if there is a way to disable the "send to Excel" functionality but still allow "Export"?

ps we are on version 10, soon to be moving to version 11, and I don't have access to the management console so not sure if there's a way of controlling this in there!!

Any help, views would be appreciated !!

Hi Dan,

I you don't like it, you can just disable it on the Captions tabs under Special Icons

Hi,

I agree with the issue about naming of excel files. "Export to" would be appreciated in next releases.

You could create a list box with various format (csv, xls, etc...) and create a macro that made the export possible... but with known limitation (i.e. using qvw in access point, etc).

Hi,

If you want to disable that Send to Excel just untick it from Chart Property -> Captions - > Special Icons Box.

Note : QlikView is not giving any random name to that file. It is always like your chart Object Id_Date_Timestamp

If you have QlikView Server, in QMC --> Document --> <your document> --> right panel --> tab Server --> section "Availability" and unthick "Print and Export to Excel".

This might avoid exporting.

Hi max

As i mentioned to previous comment, we have unticked the options in the object properties, but they are still accessible if you right mouse click on the object.  All the options do is not display an icon on the chart header!!!

Yeh we need to look at options in QMC, unfortunately our techies like to keep things like that hidden from us and we have to instruct them what to do etc not alwasys easy !!!

I suggest you take this point to create a new idea with the topic to extend the export features to some customizing options.
