How does one go about changing the format (and color) of the tick labels in a slider object?
If you mean Units/Slider color - its in the properties -> Presentation tab
I fingered it out. You have to use the Number tab in the Properties form, select Date, and then specify the format to use.
Changing unit ticks changes the color of the labels as well. This is not the desired result.
