What is the difference between var and $ var?

Do not quite understand the difference, someone who can explain to me. Thanks in advance

in the former the expression is defined (not exactly but for lets say so for understanding purpose) in the latter the expression string is evaluated.

lets say var is defined as max(value), it wont give value unless an "=" is placed (which is evaluating the string). the same can be done by $(var).
