What is the suggested config for a developers machine?

I run Windows in a VM on a MacBook Pro. My laptop is struggling when working with customers data, and was therefore thinking of upgrading my laptops' memory and/or hdd to sdd. Currently I have 8gb of memory.
What is the suggested config for a developers machine?
It is a had´rd question as its has allot to do with what kind of clients and data you are working with. My current machine is a laptop with a I7 processor and 12GB or ram and it handles the majority of my work, but I also have a server available when I need to do more heavy lifting.
