Will indexed tables help in accessing data

We are pulling data from SAP (VBRK) table, we have indexed this table of ERDAT  field. We are pulling data on the condition of value of ERDAT field only. Will indexing on this field improve the execution speed or  not.

The where clause would work on an indexed field, the search would be faster, hence the execution speed is expected to be improved.

yes usually but it depends on several things; for a single table it depends mainly on the % of records you read with respect to the total. If you read all the records, using the index takes longer. For a very smalll table, index is useless.
