difference of 2 expressions

1) Sum( {$<Year = (Year + {“20*”,1997}) – {2000} >} Sales )

2) Sum( {$<Year = Year + ({“20*”,1997} – {2000}) >} Sales )

What is the difference between 1 and 2?

I think what threw me off was Year = Year was used instead of Year = p(Year).
