getpossiblecount regardless of current selections

Do I need to use set analysis with the "1" identifier to get the getpossiblecount for all the records.  There should be an easier way.  I just want a count of the records that ignores all selections.  Am I using the wrong function?

Don't know which function you are using, but using {1} ignores all selections

Count({1} FieldName)
