the function gives , it will aggregate the status based on the ID and then

gives the count noumber  of NULL values

In the chart where you use this, possibly there is multiple dimensions; id being one of them. The expression counts the null (null()) values for field status and gives the output as aggregated level of id dimension (Note: this aggregation is caused by 'Total <id>' in your expression).
