list boxes don't allow for multiple selections when not visible

Hopefully, this is a simple end user experience question.

We have a list box that has hundreds of values. When the end user selects a few and then needs to search for one that is not visible, it selects the option searched for, but then unselects any previously selected items.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the berst way to handle this?

This is the way list box should work. I think you can go to previous selection. That will again preserve the selections.

Use CTRL before confirming the new selection ...
