OLEDB is the successor to the earlier ODBC.

I always use OLEDB in preference to ODBC.

It is very important to understand and test your preferred method of connection. One issue I have had previously is bit values in databases being returned differently. Some return them as 0 and 1, and others as 0 and -1. My advice is to pick your preferred method and stick with it.

Whilst Microsoft OLEDB was originally released as the successor to ODBC with intended improvements in functionality and performance, they have since back tracked and have actually removed the OLEDB provider for SQL 2014. They have also released information that ODBC can perform better than OLEDB.

Many developers automatically state OLEDB is "better" than ODBC as this was how it was described at the outset, but this view is not fully correct any more. There is more info on Wikipedia, specifically the 2 links in the References section ... OLE DB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
