Average No of Days without "borderline"-values

On a dashboard i show an average for an interval between dates. The simplified expression looks something like this;

avg(interval(EndDate - StartDate,'DD'))

Very simple but now it gets a bit more complex... I want do remove the max and the min values from the calculation. I think this is a good idea because often theese "borderline" values are so "out of range" that no actual analysis can be performed on the avg no. Is there a nice set of functions that can help me with this?

For further information i don't want the avg function to include the values below marked with X (the X is not a field from the data, just to give you the idea).
