Loss of Bookmark when User is assigned to different Document/Group

Hi All,

Our Users are grouped according to some parameter/transactions/performances, and we have some Groups ex: Group 1, Group 2, Group 3.....

We have categorized the QVWs like Dashboard_Group_1. qvw, Dashboard_Group_2. qvw, Dashboard_Group_3. qvw etc etc.

If a User A is belonging to Group 1 based on today's performance, he/she may shift to some other Groups say Group 2 or 3 based on next day performances. So if today he is in Dashboard_Group_1. qvw, the next day he might be in some other QVWs based on performance.

The Problem Is:

  • Today the User is creating certain Bookmark in Dashboard_Group_3. qvw and keeping it. Those info are also stored in .shared file.
  • Next day when the User is shifted to Dashboard_Group_1. qvw, after the QV jobs refresh, he is loosing the Bookmarks that were applied in previous day document. The Bookmarks are certainly not carried to the other document.
  • HOW TO carry the Bookmarks / Not to Loose the Bookmarks / Fix this issue?

Any help in this regard please?

Bookmarks are in the .Shared File for that document.

So if the user is looking at a different file then that file has a different .shared so the bookmark will not be there.

UNFORTUNATLY it is not easy to move bookmarks in .Shared files between documents. But you can replace one documents .Shared file with another. Just rename it to match the Document Name. but this will overwrite what was already there. Merging .Shared Files is not really possible without XML editing.

I agree with Steven, Each user document with have it .shared file and if the user moves from 1 qvw to other the bookmarks will not migrate. Why dont you have all the information in one qvw file and have some kind of section access setup to the user/documents? Just a thought..

Yes Steven,

This could be a manual rework to rename the .Shared file to match the Document Name and that may overwrite the new BMs in the 2nd doc. So not that much reliable.

Was looking for any script that can be read from .shared file and generate some QVD from that to be used in 2nd QVW.

I have done this manually with a XML editor but it is not easy.

If you have a XML editor that you can batch up you could probably do it.

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for your inputs.

However the design is like that only and we are maintaining different document Based on Groups. The design is already in Production and we can't revert as of now.

Hi Mohanty,

The Bookmarks are stored in the .shared per document basis, if bookmark created in one Dashboard file it may not be access by other QVW file.

So your current requirement is not possible.

The alternatives is you need to create the document bookmarks in the QVW file itself in all the Dashboards, so that the user can select those in the Dashboard.

OR

Combine all the Dashboards into one and based on section access or any other logic display those data.

Hope this helps you.

Regards,

Jagan.
