QlikView Server performance issues in VMware ESX 4.0 VM

We are having performance issues when accessing data from a small (12MB) application. We have a very strong VMware ESX 4.0 host with 4 quad core procs and 128GB RAM. The VM is running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise 64-Bit SP2 with 4 vCPU and 96GB RAM. There are no other VMs running on the host. We've tried everything from CPU affinity to static allocation of memory to lowering the amount of vRAM. We finally saw some improvement in performance when we assigned only one vCPU, however it is still not acceptable and with only one vCPU, the server will come to a crawl once we get many users accessing the server.

Is anyone else running QlikView in ESX 4.0 and if so, please let me know how you have the VM configured. Also, please let me know if QlikView is officially supported in ESX.

Performance issues with a 12MB Qlikview application on a 96GB RAM server? That's gotta be some kind of a record. 😉

Back to serious. I would suggest that you try with larger data amounts to evaluate scalability, more specifically; with data that fits real world situations. Parallelism isn't always affective on smaller data sets - there's overhead involved in multi-threaded operations as well.

Exactly what data are you using? What are the hardware? CPU type? Has the hardware been utilized before in larger scale?

Qlikview is not yet "certified" for virtual environments like VMWare, but there are definitely work in progress on that area.

Try to give your virtual machine 8GB of ram and 1 vCPU and try if it's faster.
Generally, a virtual machine doesn't increase performances like a physical machine, often 2 vCPU are faster than 4 vCPU and remember anyway that your vmware host use all CPU even your virtual machien have 1 vCPU.
On this kind of dimension i suggest anyway a physical machine, regards

We are running large scale documents on our vmware server. Half a gig document is running good with 32gig allocation. i wouldn't think it was specifically virt but maybe a problem with your document or hardware.

Did you get anywhere with this?

We have pretty much the same set up in terms of ESX and VMWare but nowhere near as much Ram as you have, and a simple 12MB (yes thats MB, not GB) file is causing the server to shoot straight to 100% cpu usage and it stays there, every single operation takes minutes.

I'm tearing my hair out here (well actually I'm not, but I would be if I had any left).

Thanks for any help.

I suggest that you register a support case to support@qlik.com for this issue, or at least have a consultant to review the document.

I have had similar problems with Qlikview in a Virtual Environment. My main issue so far has been with the OCX that I use to facilitate the loading of the documents. It intermittently crashes when it is trying to unload the OCX as it is cycling through my dashboards.

I hope Qlikview is planning on coming up with VM guidelines and soon. I would imagine there are lots offolks looking to utilize hosted environments in VMs.
