RecNo or RowNo?

Do you know the difference between the RecNo() and the RowNo() functions?  You may think that you can use these interchangeably to count the records or rows in a table but these functions differ slightly.  Check out my blog to see how they differ or the attached technical brief which discusses the difference as well as how to use the counter functions Iterno() and FieldValueCount().

Thanks,

Jennell

Very important to know and understand Jennell, thank you for assembling this thorough coverage.

I may want to suggest adding one scenario.  There's been situations where when loading from flat files, Excel spreadsheets in particular, where it has become important to keep a rigid RecNo() on the QV side that attempts to synchronize exactly with the Cell references on the Excel side.

Therefore if we're testing and validating the numbers on the QlikView application and we see a granular level entry that has RecNo() = 100 on the QlikView side, we can expect to go back to the original sourcing spreadsheet, open it up and go to Row 100 and find the same entry.

However, these results can be different depending on if you are using an ODBC connection to a spreadsheet vs. the flat-file Wizard.  The ODBC connection will tabulate blank excel rows in the RecNo() function, while the Table Wizard will skip all rows which are blank and they will not be assigned a RecNo().

In cases like that, where you want direct traceability back to the originating spreadsheet cell, it is important what type of connection is made, and its impact on RecNo().

Very helpful and easy to understand document. Thanks for your time and effort for creating a document like this.
