The entire directory inside the archive needs to be placed in a personal/server extensions directory. Then it will work like any extension. I guess I could make it a QAR, but they aren't perfect either.

I don't suppose you've got a "how to for dummies" type example have you?  I've never used extentions before so have no idea about where to save a server / personal extension directory.
