How to link dashboard to excel data on Sharepoint 2013?

I'm trying to connect my dashboard to an excel file on sharepoint 2013 but I'm having no joy.

Sharepoint and Qlikview: How to connect a Sharepoint list to Qlikview

I found this but to be honest I don't really know how to go about creating a list in sharepoint and what that should look like. I'm not even really sure why I have to create a list?

Everything I've found online has been for the old sharepoint too and 2013 looks very different.

Could anybody offer any guidance here?
