You can't change the data type, only the formatting. But exporting to excel doesn't also export the formatting. You can either use a macro to export to excel and change the formatting. Or you can manually change the formatting in excel.
can you post sample data which you want to convert in number.

If you set the data type under Settings- Document Properties- Number and make sure the field you want to change is set to the format you want it in. Exporting to excel seems to pick up this formatting.
