Linked objects in nested containers

As I use containers more and more and use containers inside containers, I am becoming incredibly frustrated with the auotmoatic linking of objects that takes place.

More specifically, you cannot unlink objects inside containers without taking them apart.

Does anybody have any tips in dealing with this BS?

Linked objects in nested containers

I am likewise frustrated with this. Any solutions?

Example:

I have a grid container holding some charts. I would like to create a copy of the grid and modify some of the charts in the new grid. Once I copy the grid, I right-click one of the charts in the new grid and select 'Linked Objects >> Unlink this object.'

However, this appears to do nothing. Ideally it would create a new copy of this chart, and it would remain in the container.

It is possible (as Aaron said in his original post) to Clone the charts, and then rebuild the container hierarchy. But this is a huge pain. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Linked objects in nested containers

Folks, I understand and share your frustration, but there can't be any solution here. The container is a collection of linked objects, they can't be un-linked and cloned separately.

When you clone a container, you simply clone a bunch of links to the same set of objects. You will end up taking it apart and rebuilding from scratch, no matter what.

The only thing we can do is understand how it works and avoid the known pitfalls.

If you are using containers a lot and need to copy/clone them a lot, I'd look into developing a macro that could automatically clone the included objects and rebuild the new version of the same container programmatically.

cheers,

Re: Linked objects in nested containers

Oleg,

I don't know if you are speaking for the QlikView dev team or if you are just voicing your opinion, but I disagree that "there can't be any solution here". I proposed a solution, and you also proposed a solution. Instead of having to write that in a Macro, QlikView should do it for me.

If you are speaking as a user like the rest of us, I agree that the present implementaiton has no solution. If you are speaking as a developer on the QlikView product team, I would ask that these solutions suggested above are taken into consideration.

Re: Linked objects in nested containers

I agree it's frustrating. A Container can hold unlinked objects. If you drag an object into a container, that object is unlinked. However, if you copy that container, the contents become linked -- but the container does not.

I would expect "Unlink" to work on the menu, it does not. I think it's legitmate to call that a bug. Either the option should work or not be offered on the menu.

Re: Linked objects in nested containers

I am building container that that 2 more levels of container in it. Rebuling the whole thing again and again makes me look like a fool as I do it. There ought to be some smarter way.

Has anyone built a macro to implement this? If yes, please share.

Aaron, I'm completely with you. I also find this rather frustrating and also would like to see a fix for this in a future release.

Any idea when this might be addressed?

Re: Linked objects in nested containers

I don't know if anyone has logged the "unlink" issue as a bug?
