Overcome Qlikview association between two fields

Hello All,

I have came across with an issue with the selections of Year & Month filters. As per Qlikview it is not issue it is association, but as per the Customer it is an issue and not user friendly.

Scenario:

Data Model has 2 tables Calendar & Fact table and both are associated with date filed.

We are using Month & Year from the Calendar table and used in filters and all expressions.

Data will be loaded for full year in the month of March, from Jan to March monthly data will be loaded respectively.

When User is selected Year - 2015 & Month - Nov and tries to select Year - 2016, Filter is not allowing the User to select Year - 2016. When User selects Year - 2015 & Month - Jan (currently data is available only for Jan, 2016) then only User will be able to select 2016, because we have data only for the Month of Jan for 2016. This issue can be solved automatically once full year data is loaded in March.

We tried adding some dummy data for full year, even though it is not working.

We removed the link between Calendar & Fact and tried to link using triggers, even though it is not working.

Need a solution where User should be able to select any Year irrespective of the month selected, i.e., When User is on YEAR - 2015 and any month from Jan - Dec and should be able to select 2016 without any restrictions.

Please help me out by providing more ideas.

Thanks,

Santosh Konda.

Re: Overcome Qlikview association between two fields

This should work if your master calendar contains the full range of dates, or how you called it "tried adding some dummy data for full year". Not sure why it's not working in your case (or have you selected also some other fields?).

I think it should be possible to create something you want using data islands / alternate states, but I am not sure about your data model and requirements. Could you upload a small sample QVW?

Re: Overcome Qlikview association between two fields

Hi Swuehl,

Thanks for the suggestions!!

It is not a Master Calender table, but the table which is used all the Months & Years. Once we join the Calendar table with the fact table and automatically data will be associated as per the Fact table. Also their is no other filters selected.

I think Alternate states will not work for my scenario.

Not sure if I understand.

If you haven't limited the records by any other selections and you are using something similar to a master calendar, the user should be able to select whatever date range he wants to.

Please post a small sample QVW that demonstrates your issue.

Re: Overcome Qlikview association between two fields

It sounds like dates like Nov-2016 or Aug-2016 are missing from your calendar. What isn't present in your data model cannot be selected.

When you create the Calendar table, let it run until the end of the current year, including all remaining months that have no facts yet. Do not reduce it to just the dates that are contained in your facts table.

And as Stefan says, do not select anything in any other field, because that selection will automatically rediuce the date set to those values that are associated with the other field selecction in your facts table..
