Hi, I've plotted points on a scatter that satisfy the x and y axes. I would also like to add reference lines or shade in the graph to match the illustration below. Has anybody got any thoughts on how I could achieve this ?

You can just create an image with all the reference and shades you want, and use it as background in colors tab...

I have used the image that you have shown above as background.
