Removing unused (Doc)Cals using powertools

In QV11 we used to automatically clean DocCals not used for a certain period using the PowerTool QvsManager. This is especially useful when employees have left our company and  when employees no longer use certain QlikView dashboards due to moving to another department or change of their tasks.

Since we have been migrated to QV12 this PowerTool QvsManager no longer removes unused DocCals. I also tried the PowerTool QvUserManager11, but with the same result: technically running ok, but not removing any unused DocCal.

From the community I understood that removing unused DocCals with PowerTools is no longer supported as from QV12.

My question is if this PowerTool functionality will be supported in the near future. I see that there are multiple release of the PowerTools over the last months to get them compliant with QV12. Having over a hundred dashboards with more than a thousand users spread over 2 servers, one can imagine that removing unused DocCals via the Management Console is very inefficient.

Hoping for an encouraging answer 🙂

Pinging Stefan as he is the brain behind the PowerTools.

Also, in version 12, the quarantine period is 7 days, from the previous 24h in QlikView 11.x

Thanks for the ping mbaeyens‌!

So, the QVS Manager is outside of the Power Tools suite, as you know, so I cannot speak for the state of that. It seems to not have been updated for QlikView 12, as per Qlikview Server CAL Manager.

Regarding Power Tools, and the Qv User Manager 10/11 - we do not have 12 support yet , but the plan is to have. I't gonna have to go on the backlog as for now, as I'm traveling and working with a lot of other things right now. That being said, I hope it's a small fix for 12, and I will look into it as soon as I can.

Sorry for the lead times.

Thank you. Meanwhile, can you provide me with some details please?

1. What command line syntax/command are you running?

2. What's the output in the console? Any errors?

3. What version of the Qv-User-Manager are you running? Is it from the Power Tools suite? If so, what version of Power Tools?

Looking forward to having the QvUserManager supporting the QV12 here too (for the same reasons as Michel).

Thanks.

I just wanted to provide some insight into what's happening on my side - I started looking into the qv-user-manager11 tool and it seems there is a mix of issues. I can get the tool to work with 12.20 Nov, but there are things in the QMS API that behaves erratically - and this tool relies on them. I've logged a bug for it, but currently have no workaround for the behavior.

Basically, the issue is that every time you make changes to the meta data objects for Document CAL allocations, it overwrites/cancel out all the quarantines - which means that previously quarantined licenses gets "un-quarantined" without notice. That is a very intrusive and hidden behavior that must be fixed.

I don't know for how long it has been this way, but basically every time you run the tool and deletes a CAL allocation, that will happen.

I'm working on a solution. Please let me know, if you can, how much impact this has on your environment.

Hi Stefan -

any luck with QlikView v12.30?
I checked the release document but have not found anything mentioning API.

Best regards, Peter.

Hi Stefan,

My apologies for the late reply. I must setup the notifications in the Qlik website, as it is not sending me anything when things have been updated.

Below the answers to your questions.

1. We are running QvsManagerBatch as follows
"E:\Apps\QVS Manager\QVSManagerBatch.exe" get -server=localhost -cals -license -documents -output="E:\Data\Qlikview\Content\Productie\Achmea\LicentieManagement\Data" -log="E:\Data\Qlikview\Content\Productie\Achmea\LicentieManagement\Logs\QvsManagerList.txt" -debug

The reason why we still prefer QvsManagerBatch over QvUserManager is that QVSManagerBatch also provides information about the number of (assigned) (doc)cal. It creates 3 simple XML files with all information we need:

Cals.xml, License.xml and Documents.xml, where Cals.xml contains two tables: NamedCAL and DocumentCAL.

Switching to QvUserManager11 would not be a problem if it provides the same information. I'll attach these 3 XML files.

2. I'm not aware of any errors, I've attached the latest log as well. All attachments in 1 zipfile.

3. As explained inthe first point, we're still running QvsManagerBatch.
However we've been testing QvUserManager in spring 2018 using PowerTools version 1.3.2 and QvUserManager 11.
When it became clewar that removing unused doccals was not supported we sticked to QvsManagerBatch.

Hope you've got enough additional nformation. If not, let me know.

Thanks for you effort in advance.

Kind regards, Michel
