Document CAL cleanup not working anymore with QV 12.10

Good morning,

Our QV environment has been upgraded from QV 11.2 SR6 to QV 12.10.

Everything seems to be in order, however the tool we have in use for the automatic clean up of Document CAL does not work anymore.

A  utility called QVS Manager Batch Tool is used for this:

Statement in QV Workbook:

EXECUTE cmd.exe /C "call-QVSManagerBatch.bat"

Whenever it is run, the QVS Manager Batch Tool log file shows the following:

27/09/2017 07:23:13 - Log file: E:\Qlikview\Install\QVSManager Batch Tool\Logs\DeletedLicense.txt

27/09/2017 07:23:16 - 1 document(s) checked, 4 Document CAL(s) deleted!

However, no Document CAL is removed anymore and i cannot find the reason why. I have tried turning on the verbose logging level to "High" but nothing is logged in relation to this.

Any ideas ?

With kind regards,

Martin van der Bent

Since the Server CAL Manager resource library page and the attached comments section (that served as a support forum) have been removed from Qlik Community, you may want to contact the author dvasseur or send him a PM. See here: CAL / Document Manager | Qlik Community

Note that you may want to reread your QlikView License Agreement again. Removing CALs violates the terms of that agreement, except in two very specific cases.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the information.

I have sent David Vasseur a e-mail message yesterday and am waiting on a response to arrive (hopefully)

With kind regards,

Peter,

Could you point me to the right part of the License Agreement explaining in which cases it's allowed to remove CALs ? I've read it (not thoroughly !) but could find anything on this.

I really want to know If this tool is indeed violating Qlik license !

Thanks !

Hi David,

As usual it's probably not the tool or the instrument that violates the license agreement but the person that is wielding this tool.

You got me there: I went looking for the part of the QULA (really dry stuff) that talks about user licenses, and could only find a paragraph that says that you can't assign licenses for shared usage.

Then I remembered that another document detailed the license types and how you should use them: License metrics for QlikView. I couldn't find the original document on the Qlik web site using the search function anymore. But going through the on-line help, I came up with this:

http://www.qlik.com/us/-/media/files/legal/license%20agreements/qlikview/qlikview-license-metrics-en...

See chapter 3, 2nd paragraph.

This document calls itself a "part of the QlikView Documentation", but AFAIK is never included.

BTW in the actual license agreement (QULA), have you spotted any reference to this Metrics document?

For others, the paragraph states:

Named and Document CALs are assigned to an identified user and may not be transferred to another user unless the transfer is due to a i) termination of employment, or ii) a transfer of the user to a new business unit or group resulting in no access to the Qlik Software. When a Named User or Document CAL is transferred, there is a 7-day quarantine before the CAL can be used by another user.

And indeed, the Metrics is listed in the QULA, as this "9.1.7. “Documentation” means the then-current user documentation for the Software, including the License Metrics document available at www.qlik.com/license-terms"

With such a definition I'm pretty sure most of the Qlik customers are violating the license right now
