Working with Cognos as a data source.

Hi all!

I'm about to start developing dashboards for the company that has implemented Cognos already. Obviously doing that within cognos is a solution I'd like to avoid, as the implementation is very weak and their reports are lacking a lot of functionalities. And now we encounter a problem - client will not allow us to access the data directly, so we'll have to use existing infrastructure. Is there a way to extract the data from it? As far as I know there's no too many cubes created but still need to get all of the data from there.

Been thiniking about  TM1Qonnect from CarpeDatum (http://www.carpedatuminc.com/Products/TM1Qonnect.aspx)  but not sure whether it'll work fine with cognos DW.

Any help appreciated.

PS.

I've found out that they're using very old software which is as follows (upgrade needed? 😞

If customer have Qlikview and Cognos, consider to use Cognos when you need to deliver scheduled PDF or HTML reports by email or save it on a folder. All the other Business Users needs surely can be achieved with Qlikview.

Consider using the already created meta data model in framework manager to learn about the relationship between tables on the datasources and others business rules.

You are right, version 8.1 is an old one, not supported by IBM. The actual version of IBM Cognos is 10.2.

Qlikview can´t connect to cognos packages created with framework manager, then you need a direct access to the DW.

Why customer doesn´t allow you direct access to the database ? How do they think to provide it to qlikview ?

The problem is that their knowledge about Cognos/BI is.... very limited. They don't even know whether upgrade to cognos 10 is available for them at no cost or not (as we found out- as long as they pay maintenance fee, upgrade is free of charge). We'd rather stick to the solution with the QlikView, but working with Cognos 10 is also taken under consideration.

For the time being  I am discussing direct access to ERP/CRM databases, as they don't even know whether they have a functional datawarehouse.

Thanks a lot.

So, if I understood you correctly, I need to learn the model, and then duplicate it in a QlickView script editor - is this what you mean?
