How to release Document CALs in QlikView?

Hi Team,

We are facing an issue with Document CALs in QlikView Server.

The server shows all Document CALs as assigned, but when checking individual documents in QMC, many CAL assignments are not visible under User Documents → Document CALs.

We have already:

  • Checked document-level CAL allocations
  • Restarted QVS services multiple times
  • Reviewed session/audit logs to identify users and accessed documents

However, some Document CALs still appear to be occupied/orphaned and are not getting released.

Could anyone please suggest the recommended/safest way to release unused or stale Document CALs in QlikView?

Thanks in advance.

It is most likely that the missing licenses were assigned to documents that have since been deleted.

Have a look at step 1 (and maybe 2) here:

To release orphaned Document CALs, identify "ghost" documents in the QMC (often listed in ALL CAPS) that no longer exist, create a dummy QVW with the exact same name, assign 0 CALs to it, and then delete the dummy file. The safest approach is to use the QMC to re-allocate CALs to a temporary file, clearing the stale PGO data.

Recommended Steps to Release Stale Document CALs

  1. Identify "Ghost" Documents:
In the QMC, look for documents in the "User Documents" list that appear in all capital letters or correspond to files that were deleted, moved, or renamed.
  2. Create a Dummy File (Re-bind CALs):
    • Create a new, empty QlikView file (.qvw).
    • Name it exactly the same as the deleted/ghost document.
    • Place it into the original folder path that the ghost document used to occupy.
  3. Remove CALs in QMC:
    • Locate the newly created dummy document in QMC.
    • Go to the Document CALs tab.
    • Set the Document CALs Allocated to this Document to 0.
    • Click Apply.
    • You can now delete this dummy file safely.
  4. Verify CAL Status:
Go to the System > Licenses > QlikView Server > Client Access Licenses > Document CALs tab to verify that the Document CALs Not Allocated on Server number has increased.
