Latest update as of Feb. 15, 2022. All current threats have been addressed.

Further updates will be made as new information becomes available.

Qlik has been diligently reviewing and testing our product suite since we’ve become aware of the Apache Log4j vulnerability mid-December.  We want to ensure Qlik users that your security is our upmost priority. We have addressed multiple vulnerabilities through a series of product patches for supported affected versions and we recommend you update to the most recent releases available, shown in the chart below.

Log4j versions before v2.16 presented the highest threat and all exposed Qlik products have provided patches with at least v2.16 and will all be updated to v2.17.1 or later under the regular release schedule as we are not vulnerable to the CVEs related to 2.17.0

We’d like to direct you to our FAQ document to review should you have any further questions, and we encourage you to comment with any additional questions.

The following products are not affected:

    • Qlik Sense Enterprise, all supported versions
    • Qlik Sense Enterprise SaaS
    • QlikView, all supported versions

Hi @Sonja_Bauernfeind  support simply replied that Nprinting is not affected and point me back to this article. Which is like circular reference, and I do not consider it OK. I replied and requested more info. Could you please interfere here and maybe escalate this to second level ?

Hello @janyf

I'll reach out to our engineers. Though of course, this may mean that, yes, it is not affected (the case was needed in order to start a proper investigation). But I will make sure that we get the proper clarity on this.

All the best,
Sonja

Hello @janyf (and @Digvijay_Singh)

The initial confusion on why you were redirected here came from log4j (which this article is about) log4net. Qlik NPrinting does not use log4j; hence it is not affected. But, in your case, we are looking at CVE-2018-1285, which is related to log4net.

Qlik NPrinting Server and Engine are not affected by CVE-2018-1285. For the Qlik NPrinting Designer, we needed your case (which I appreciate you logging), and it will move on to R&D.

You should receive an update on the ticket, and I anticipate a defect ID to come out of this, which can then be tracked through our Release Notes. It is too early for me to say what the outcome of the investigation will be, of course.

Edit 8th of February: Here is the ID for our internal investigation: QB-17985

All the best,
Sonja

Hi, do we have a resolution for Apache commons vulnerability. We are seeing the below vulnerability on one of our Qlik replicate server:

CVE-2022-42889
Apache Commons Text performs variable interpolation, allowing properties to be dynamically evaluated and expanded. The standard format for interpolation is "${prefix:name}", where "prefix" is used to locate an instance of org.apache.commons.text.lookup.StringLookup that performs the interpolation. Starting with version 1.5 and continuing through 1.9, the set of default Lookup instances included interpolators that could result in arbitrary code execution or contact with remote servers. These lookups are: - "script" - execute expressions using the JVM script execution engine (javax.script) - "dns" - resolve dns records - "url" - load values from urls, including from remote servers Applications using the interpolation defaults in the affected versions may be vulnerable to remote code execution or unintentional contact with remote servers if untrusted configuration values are used. Users are recommended to upgrade to Apache Commons Text 1.10.0, which disables the problematic interpolators by default.

Hi @kamal0475

I researched this CVE and found the following:

The only place in QDI where apache.commons.text is used is in the Replicate Salesforce incremental-load JREP endpoint (salesforce-source-endpoint.jar). Neither Compose nor QEM use this library.

The library version currently used there is 1.9 (in Replicate 2022.5) and it is vulnerable. It should be changed to 1.10 in a future service release.

Still, even though the vulnerable JAR exists, there is no use at all of the vulnerable class StringSubstitutor which is a prerequisite to exploiting the vulnerability. Hence, from Qlik perspective, the risk of this CVE for the QDI products is zero. As usual, Qlik will update this library in a service release.

Customers who are not using that endpoint can delete the salesforce-source-endpoint.jar so it does not come up in later scans.

Thanks,

Dana

Hello @kamal0475 ,

Besides @Dana_Baldwin comment, I'd like to list out the Replicate version and the Apache Commons Text  library version mapping, so far you may decide to upgrade Replicate to higher versions if needed:

Replicate Version Apache Commons Text  library version Notes
2021.11 and all previous versions NA No CVE-2022-42889 vulnerability because of no salesforce-source-endpoint.jar was introduced yet
2022.5 1.9 Build GA to PR4
2022.11 1.10.0 Build GA to PR5
2023.5 1.10.0 Build GA to PR1

BTW, please check Qlik Replicate Product Lifecycle for all supported versions.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

John.

Hello  Dana/John,

We are on 2021.11 version of the Qlik replicate and QEM. So can we go ahead and search for the CVE-2022-42889(salesforce-source-endpoint.jar) and remove it?

And we will decide on the upgrade after internal discussion.

Thank you,

Kamal.

Hi @kamal0475

Since you are on 2021.11, the jar file will not be there so there should be zero risk. Also, QEM does not use this far file on any version.

Hope this helps!

Dana
