Can NPrinting leverage any other data sources than QlikView and Qlik Sense?

No, QVWs and QVFs are the only data sources for NPrinting reports.

on top of what Stephen has written XLS spreadsheet can be used as recipient import source

Your templates are office files so if you prepopulate them with anything it will still be there.
