Is it possible to create a QVW that's looking at an Excel file as a data source and then later change the data source to a proper database? Let's assume that the tables in the data base are the same as the tabs in the Excel file. Woudl the same work for moving from an Access database to a larger database later? I'm just looking to start some development before the server and a proper database is up and running.
Both aren't too hard. If you are going to use excel consider retrieving data from excel through an odbc connection. That way you're treating Excel about the same as you would any other database. That will make it easier to migrate later.
