Qlik Sense has been moved to another environment or the operating system has been reinstalled. After this, the passwords are not present in the data connections where Username + Password was chosen as authentication mode. The reloads fail asking to enter correct credentials. It is possible to re-enter the password manually in each data connection to workaround the problem.
The problem can occur also when the Qlik Sense internal certificates are removed.

The problem doesn't occur with other authentication methods, like Kerberos.

Environment

  • Qlik Sense 2021 and higher.

Resolution

The Password disappears when Qlik Sense is not able to read it because the Qlik Sense internal certificate is missing. This normally happens when Qlik Sense has been moved to a new environment. It is necessary to follow these steps to import the right certificate in the new environment:

  • On the old environment:
Go to the Certificates section in QMC and export new certificates using the FQDN of the new server.
    • Be sure to include the Private key.
    • The certificates must be in Windows format.
  • On the new environment:
Import the Trusted Root and Server certificates into the Local Computer/Computer Account snap-in section in their appropriate areas:
    • Server certificate  > "Personal" area.
    • Trusted Root certificate > "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" area.
    • Mark the certificates as exportable.
    • Delete the certificates already generated if present (e.g. issued to newserver.company.com issued by newserver.company.com).

Cause

Data connection passwords are stored encrypted in the Qlik Sense database. The Qlik Sense internal certificates are necessary to read them. Qlik Sense can't  decrypt the passwords if the original certificates are missing, for example after a migration. For this reason, the passwords are shown empty and it is necessary to re-enter them manually to make the connection work.
