QlikView Settings.ini files: locations and purposes

In a typical QlikView installation, multiple settings.ini files can be found. What is their location and purpose?

QlikView any versions

The Qlikview Desktop Client / IE-Plugin Settings.ini

Standard Path: %appdata%\QlikTech\QlikView\  (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\QlikTech\QlikView).

Please note that this is a Windows-user-specific path. This is the setting file shared by both QlikView Desktop (qv.exe) and the IE-plugin. It is used to store settings that concern client-side visualizations, engine behaviour, logging, reloads (qv.exe only), license and other aspects.

The QlikView Server (QVS) Settings.ini

Standard Path:C:\ProgramData\QlikTech\QlikViewServer on each cluster node

This is the setting file used by the QVS service for the server engine behaviour, logging, for visualizations and other QVS-related aspect.

The QlikView Batch (qvb.exe) Settings.ini

Standard Path:C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\QlikTech\QlikViewBatch

This is the file using by the QVB, the non-graphical version of the client which is used to perform reloads by the QlikView Distribution Service (QDS). It is used to store settings about reloads and their logging. Since it is used for reload-only purposes, it doesn't contain information about graphical rendering or license settings, and it's therefore usually a lot simpler than the other two settings.ini files.

We have deployed scripts that check and change the Settings.ini files on our client PCs to ensure that they include the [Settings 7] GraphicsBackEnd=1 to fix visualization issues. We're seeing these files get changed back somehow. Could this be because we have not added [Settings 7] GraphicsBackEnd=1 to the settings.ini file on our QlikView servers [QVS]? Is this also needed on these servers?

Hello @qvd1rkqv

If you have a clustered environment, then the change would need to be carried out on each cluster node as to not accidentally have the settings overwritten as they are synced across nodes.

Though it appears you mean you changed it on the PC?

In this case, the QlikView server does not apply settings to the local machines, no. It is more likely that they are being reverted back to default due to, for example, user profiles being reset.

All the best,
