Show MoreLast month the Academic Program had another opportunity to provide a workshop to one of our university partners, Penn State Great Valley. In the past, most workshops were hosted on campus where as many as 40 students would join. However, after the pandemic, the landscape of education changed and more students either chose to learn remote or did not have a choice.
To accommodate all of our members, we have pivoted the way we host our workshops. Currently we offer a hybrid model so we are able to be on campus for some students and allow others to join via zoom. Workshop information and necessary documents are shared with the class prior to joining and all students are encouraged to sign up for the program to ensure they have software and training they can go back and continue their learning with.
In attendance we have a Qlik Solution Architect on campus @ChrisReiter and @JoeHo on zoom to help field any questions.
If you are interested in a Qlik presentation or mini workshop, please apply to the program by visiting the website qlik.com/us/company/academic-program and then email us at academicprogram@qlik.com

At the Learning Analytics and Knowledge Conference (LAK ’25), they revealed that looking at just two to five hours of student activity in intelligent tutoring systems or educational games can predict, months in advance, how those students will perform on end-of-year standardized tests. Data from intelligent tutors helps predict K-12 academic outcomes, study finds | Stanford Report
Researchers analyzed only the early interaction logs and used machine learning to spot patterns. The surprise? These short-term models were just as accurate as those built from an entire year of data.
As Professor Emma Brunskill from Stanford explains:
“In education, we often are interested in delayed outcomes like end-of-the-year assessments, but it would be useful if we could predict those outcomes using shorter amounts of data from educational software platforms.”This shows you don’t need massive datasets to uncover valuable insights, you need the skills to interpret them. Early predictions like this allow teachers to act sooner, whether that means offering extra help or providing greater challenges.
That’s where data literacy comes in. When you know how to explore and interpret data, you can spot patterns early, act with precision, and track results over time.
The Qlik Academic Program helps make that possible, offering free access to Qlik Sense analytics software, self-paced training, certifications, and resources to apply insights ethically and effectively.

Show MoreArtificial intelligence is making headlines everywhere. It can write essays, summarize articles, and generate images in seconds. For students, educators, and researchers, this opens up exciting possibilities.
However, with these new tools comes a new challenge: how do we know if what AI gives us is actually true?
AI doesn’t understand facts, it just predicts what sounds right based on patterns. This means it can sometimes produce false or misleading information. Experts call this “AI hallucination.”
It’s not just about mistakes; bias is also a major issue. AI bias happens when the data used to train a model includes unfair patterns, like stereotypes or unbalanced information. AI can accidentally repeat and even strengthen these biases because it learns from what’s already out there. That’s why it’s so important to stop and ask: Where did this data come from? Who’s included and who’s missing?
Data literacy and critical thinking matter more than ever, because recognizing these issues takes more than just trusting the tech.
In fact, a recent article from MIT reminds us that while AI can support decisions, it shouldn’t replace human judgment. We still need people to ask questions, check sources, and notice when something seems off. AI can speed up the process, but it’s people who make sense of the output. (When AI Gets It Wrong: Addressing AI Hallucinations and Bias - MIT Sloan Teaching & Learning Technologies

Show MoreThe old saying, GIGO-garbage in, garbage out, stays relevant even today with the world of fast evolving technologies. In particular, the world of data-AI is no different. Your AI projects are majorly impacted by the quality of data and therefore data has to be "ready" for AI. What might be relevant for one particular AI project might not be relevant to another. Getting your AI project to deliver the right outcomes is dependent on the processes brought to the table with the data in question.

Show MoreToday, predictive analytics is being used to anticipate patient needs before they arise. Hospitals can now analyze historical patient data to forecast admissions, optimize staffing, and even predict potential complications. This proactive approach not only improves care but also reduces costs and increases efficiency.
Another major area of impact is personalized medicine. By analyzing genetic, lifestyle, and environmental data, healthcare professionals can create tailored treatment plans for individuals—leading to more effective interventions and better recovery rates.
As digital health records, wearable devices, and real-time monitoring become more common, the role of data in healthcare will only grow. Future professionals with strong data literacy skills will be at the forefront of this transformation.

Show MoreWharton Business School recently published an article that made a simple but powerful point. When working with data, don’t start by asking what data you have. Start by asking what decision you’re trying to make. (Wharton, 2024 Better Decisions with Data: Asking the Right Question - Knowledge at Wharton)
Once you know what you’re trying to decide, you can figure out what kind of data is helpful. Otherwise, you may spend time analyzing numbers that don’t matter.
It’s also important to stay curious. Be willing to question what you think you know. Sometimes the real insight comes from looking at things in a new way or noticing what’s missing.
AI is powerful and fast, but it doesn’t understand your goals, context, or values. That’s why human thinking is essential; we need people to see the big picture, ask the right questions, and make ethical, responsible decisions.
The Qlik Academic Program offers free access to powerful analytics tools, training, and certifications. Students build career-ready skills, professors bring real-world tools into the classroom, researchers uncover insights faster, and universities boost innovation in data education.

Originally from Ethiopia, she studied applied computer science at Thomas More after transferring through the EU’s Erasmus+ program. It was there she encountered Qlik through a data visualization module and discovered a powerful tool that would shape her future.
“My first impression of Qlik was how easy it was to use,”
— Lwam Teklay, Data Consultant at EpicDataTeklay’s introduction to Qlik came during a project where she analyzed flight delays at Schiphol Airport using Qlik Sense. The assignment required building multi-sheet dashboards to identify causes of delays, allowing her to combine storytelling and data in a meaningful, intuitive way.
“You can use Python for visualization, but Qlik makes it faster and more accessible,” she said. “You don’t need to code everything—you can focus on insights.”
This practical approach reflects the core philosophy at Thomas More. According to lecturer Ellen Torfs, who leads the university’s Business Intelligence and Visualization module:
“It’s important to go beyond theory. Even students going into development need to understand how to present and work with data.”
All 140 IT students take the Qlik-based module, leveraging the Qlik Academic Program’s free software, training, and certifications. The learning journey is structured to grow confidence while giving students flexibility to explore complex data tasks in an approachable way.
Teklay’s journey didn’t end in the classroom. She took her skills further during an internship with EpicData, working on a project titled “Sensor to Savior”. Using open-source data from the Catalan Water Agency and additional datasets from Kaggle, she built two dashboards analyzing Catalonia’s water supply. One dashboard was designed for the general public, while the other delivered real-time operational insights for water management professionals.
“I used Qlik AutoML® to add predictive features. The fact that I could use one platform end-to-end—data integration, analysis, and prediction—was a huge advantage,”
— Lwam TeklayThe project sparked interest from government bodies and even inspired conversations with a Belgian water treatment operator. Most importantly, it led directly to a full-time job offer from EpicData, where Lwam now works as a data consultant.
“The Qlik Academic Program helps students discover their strengths—whether it's data modeling, analytics, or storytelling,”
— Frédéric Vissers, Qlik Consultant at EpicDataThis story is more than a personal win—it’s a model of what’s possible when academic institutions and industry align around data literacy. It’s also a powerful example of the Qlik Academic Program’s mission in action: equipping students with real, marketable skills that open doors and solve real problems.

Colleges and universities across the UK are responding by infusing data skills into their curricula – and they’re not doing it alone. One community-driven initiative helping to bridge the gap is the Qlik Academic Program, which partners with universities to boost data literacy for free. Qlik, a global analytics company, offers free Qlik Sense cloud software licenses and a full suite of learning resources to university educators and students. This means students can get hands-on experience with industry-leading analytics tools beyond textbook theory. For example, at the University of Worcester, integrating Qlik into coursework let students go beyond theory to analyze real-world data and develop “workplace-ready skills” in data analysis and storytelling. The learning platform also includes a range of free courses covering data analytics and Qlik’s software, so students can learn at their own pace. As they progress, they can test their knowledge through exams and earn official badges and certificates. The qualifications offered by Qlik allow students to improve their marketability by demonstrating new data skills to future employers. In other words, passing these exams gives students concrete proof – in the form of digital certificates – that they are data literate, which can significantly boost their employability.Building a Data-Literate Community
The impact of such programs is already being felt. The Qlik Academic Program has teamed up with many UK universities – including the University of Sheffield, Liverpool, Birmingham and Worcester – creating a growing community of data-savvy graduates. Educators receive ready-made curricula and toolkits to seamlessly incorporate data analytics into classes, and students from all disciplines gain the confidence to work with data. In a job market where data literacy skills are in high demand and every sector is becoming data-centric, these collaborations ensure that the next generation enters the workforce ready to hit the ground running. It’s a true win-win: students enhance their career prospects, and industries get the data-literate talent they desperately need.Ready to boost your data skills or bring these opportunities to your campus? Learn more about the Qlik Academic Program on our website: https://qlik.com/academicprogram and join the movement to make the UK a data-literate nation. Every student with data literacy is one step closer to a future-proof career – and together we can close the skills gap, one data-informed graduate at a time.

Show MoreOriginally trained in Mechanical Engineering, Terrence’s academic journey took a turn toward management early on. He completed his PhD in Operations Management at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and has since dedicated his teaching, research, and consultancy to computer simulation, operations management, supply chain management, and—most recently—business analytics.
Terrence currently leads two core modules at the University of Sheffield: The Intelligent Organisation (MBA) and Business Intelligence (BA). His mission is clear and forward-thinking: to equip management students with the analytics skills they need to thrive in today’s data-driven business world. “In today’s business world, managers cannot perform their roles effectively without understanding how to leverage data to make better decisions,” he emphasizes.
Terrence began using Qlik in his teaching in 2020, first incorporating it into the Business Intelligence module, and gradually expanding it into the MBA curriculum. He was inspired to start using Qlik after seeing a colleague use it and quickly recognized the intuitive nature of its dashboard creation process. “I was particularly drawn to Qlik’s logical sequence for creating dashboards. It makes it easy to explain the entire journey, from loading data to building a fully functional dashboard,” he explains.
In his undergraduate course, students participate in a series of hands-on workshops where they build dashboards and develop vital storytelling skills—an approach that not only deepens their learning but also sharpens their employability. "Students have definitely acknowledged that learning Qlik has enhanced their employability skills" Terrence notes.
Looking ahead to 2025, Terrence is excited to develop real-world scenarios in HR, supply chain, and customer analytics, aiming to enrich his classroom sessions with even more practical relevance. “I aim to develop specific scenarios for HR, supply chain, and customer analytics and integrate them into hands-on sessions. Additionally, I plan to expand the use of Qlik in the MBA module,” he shares.
As an Educator Ambassador, Terrence hopes to amplify Qlik’s presence in business schools and share his experiences internationally, especially in Southeast Asia. He believes management education is still playing catch-up when it comes to embedding analytics in mainstream curricula, but change is on the horizon. “I believe business/management schools have been slow to embed analytics into popular courses such as Business Management and MBA programmes. However, I expect this to change over time. I strongly believe analytics should be a core module in management education,” he asserts.
When he’s not championing analytics in the classroom, Terrence enjoys the peaceful beauty of Sheffield, nestled near the Peak District, where he loves going for walks. Originally from Sri Lanka, he keeps his heritage alive through a unique hobby: karaoke in Sinhala! A passionate songwriter, he has penned over 25 songs—one of which he has even recorded.
We’re thrilled to welcome Terrence Perera to the Educator Ambassador community this year. His passion for transforming management education through data and storytelling will undoubtedly inspire students and educators alike.

Show MoreAcross Latin America, the need for data skills is growing faster than ever. A recent World Economic Forum article shows that 84% of employers are stepping up to train their teams, knowing that the future will be shaped by AI, big data, and digital technologies. But the challenge is big: many leaders also say we need more public support to help people gain the skills they need to succeed.
Today, learning data analysis, critical thinking, and digital literacy is essential to thrive in a world that is changing every day. Without action, the digital gap in Latin America could grow even wider, making it harder for people and businesses to compete on the global stage.

When Alexander Flaig set out to design his Business Analytics course in 2023, his goal was simple but ambitious: give students hands-on experience with tools they’d actually use in the real world. That’s why he made Qlik a cornerstone of the curriculum from day one.
Fast forward to today, and Qlik has become more than just a platform in the classroom—it’s a launchpad for careers.
From the Classroom to the Interview Room
The impact of integrating Qlik into coursework has been immediate and powerful. “Yes, some of my students have landed internships and jobs thanks to their Qlik knowledge,” Alexander shares. “One student was even interrupted during a job interview because they knew more about Qlik than expected.”
These moments underscore what happens when education stays aligned with industry trends: students graduate with skills that employers are actively seeking.
Certifications, Real Projects, and Industry Collaboration
Alexander’s course doesn’t stop at theory. Students earn certifications like Qlik’s Business Analyst and Data Architect credentials, which help them stand out in a competitive job market. The capstone project involves building interactive dashboards using real-world company data—last year, students collaborated with Drake Analytics, creating professional-grade visualizations that speak volumes about their capabilities.
“Check out one of the dashboards from last year’s class—it’s a testament to how powerful learning becomes when it's rooted in real-world application.”
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
For Alexander, 2025 is all about continuing momentum. “My goal is to keep offering certifications and to integrate more AI-driven analytics into the course,” he says. With the rapid evolution of AI and data tools, this forward-thinking approach ensures students stay at the cutting edge.
The Future of Higher Ed: Adapt or Fall Behind
The course has grown from 20 to 80 students in just a year—a clear sign that demand for practical, industry-relevant education is surging. “Many students say it’s one of the best courses they’ve ever taken,” Flaig adds. “Higher education is in the middle of a transformation. Institutions must adapt to this new reality—or risk becoming obsolete.”
Beyond the Classroom
When he’s not teaching, Alexander can be found researching and speaking about AI strategies and emerging technologies. He brings that same future-focused energy to his classroom, ensuring students not only understand the tools of today but are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
On Being a Qlik Educator Ambassador
As an Educator Ambassador, Alexander hopes to deepen his understanding of the Qlik ecosystem and expand its footprint in education. “I want to gain deeper insights into the Qlik toolbox and use my role to spread awareness about the benefits of Qlik in academic settings,” he says.
With his passion for teaching, commitment to real-world learning, and drive to innovate, Alexander Flaig is not just teaching analytics—he’s redefining what business education can be.
