Bookmarks stop working after document overwritten with a new version

Hello QlikView experts,

Could you please help with the following issue?

A number of shared server bookmarks were created by users on a document in the live server of our QlikView 10 landscape. These bookmarks worked up to the point of overwriting the document with a more recent version of the document. The new version differed in that it contained a few newly added fields.

According to the QlikView reference manual if a document contains the relevant fields the bookmarks should still work. I cannot see any fields which have been changed/removed, only newly added ones. Are there any other reasons which can result in bookmarks not functioning after an overwrite?

Many thanks in advance.

Best,

Aleks

Hi Aleks,

Thanks for the reply.

My problem is,

Users saves bookmarks in accesspoint.

Now we have added a new field in the data model and that field has selection in the application.

Now if a user do some selections in the accesspoint, then if he selects his saved bookmark before this field was added.

then the saved bookmark is not working.

Is there any work around for this to get the saved bookmark work and also the selection should remain in the new field added in the application?

Hi Uday,

The only solution options I can think of in this case are the ones I mentioned above (post from Jul 9, 2014 8:38 AM). Bookmarks are very handy but can turn into quite a big support challenge in my experience.

Hi Aleksandar,

Thanks for the solution to this 'bookmark issue'.

But in my scenario (User has created a bookmark by selecting 150 values from a single field and few other fields)

and now there are multiple requests to add new fields every 2 weeks.

In that case, this bookmark issue can create a lot of problems and we can't ask users to create a new bookmark again.

We are using QV 11.2 SR5.

Kindly suggest an alternate if possible.

Regards,

Sarang

Hi Sarang,

I am not sure the challenge you have relates to the issue I described above. In my case the culprit was a field with "Always one value selected" and you mention that in your situation a field has 150 values selected. This indicates that the selections in this field can be cleared so bookmarks which start by clearing all selections should work.

Do you have any fields where "Always one value selected" is enabled? Do the users need the bookmark(s) to select values in the newly added fields?

In any case there seem to be two options for editing a bookmark:

1. Recreate the bookmark and choose to replace the old one. This works with document bookmarks, but you would need to test if the URLs of the old bookmarks are still going to work (for people who call the bookmarks using this approach).

2. Export the bookmark, edit its XML definition, and import it again. I have not ventured into doing this so I can't really advise you here.

If enough users are using a particular bookmark there might be a case for creating a separate Sheet or indeed separate QVW to replace the bookmark.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Aleks

Hi Aleksandar,

I know this post as old one. Please suggest me how to do this.

I have created 5 Document bookmarks at qvw. We are having nearly 350 users to access this APP through access point. These 350 users want to edit or update those bookmarks by including two or more fields when required in document bookmarks. Is this possible to update a bookmark through browser.

Hi Kalyan,

As far as I know document bookmarks can only be updated from the desktop client. It might be worth googling this one up, though, as I haven't dealt with QlikView document bookmarks in a while.

Do the new bookmarks need to be document ones? Document bookmarks are arguably easier to manage, but if the users are keen to create new ones quickly it is probably easier for them to apply the document bookmarks as a starting point. Then the required additional/changed filters can be made and the resulting selections saved as new user bookmarks. The latter can be shared if required.

I hope this helps.

Very helpful, would have spent more time had it not been for you explaining what was causing the issue.

Best,
