New user experience

Sometimes it can be useful to hear from a brand new user, and the issues they are facing just simply installing your product.

  1. Installed product to c:\program files\talend\ and recieved the error message that the workspace was in use. Error message makes no sense, and in fact there should be no spaces in the install path folder name. Had to google to get the solution.
  2. Deleted the folder from step 1.
  3. Installed to c:\talend. Run TOS_DI-win-x86-64.exe, but find myself stuck on the agree to apache license screen (overlaid above the Talend splash). Unable to click the "I accept" button. Or rather, when the button is pressed it does nothing.
  4. Completely unable to run C:\Talend\TOS_DI-Win32-20200219_1130-V7.3.1\TOS_DI-win-x86_64.exe because of the error in point 3, above.
  5. Again, goolge the issue in order to find the solution. A solution from a MacOS install suggests that "v7.3.1 requires a version 1.8_161 minimum JDK". Right, this wasn't described on the installer download page or any 'in your face minimum requirements' anywhere. Now, if you happen to be in the know, you'd know that Oracle JDK is no longer free and open source for any commercial use. I don't know if I'll use this software commercially (probably not), but lets assume I should get Open JDK instead.
  6. Google Open JDK and Talend - find that the first few results talk about issues with various versions. I find a link in a community post to the Talend documentation for Compatible Java Environments. The information I need is in size 12 font, set to 75% (so size 9), in a footnote, that recommends Zulu JDK.
  7. Install Zulu JDK
  8. Try Running TOS_DI - Fail at "I accept" button.
  9. Uninstall all instances of "Java" in Programs and Features, including all updates. Open up command prompt and type in "java -version" at the prompt, observe the version has now changed from Oracle Java to Zulu Java.
  10. Try running TOD_DI-win-x86_64.exe, click the I accept button and get to the next step.

Pretty ugly experience so far

Thank you for your feedback @Simon Webster. I have taken a look and have passed some recommendations over to our R&D team and our web team. Our website is currently going through a few changes, so changes to our downloads section will hopefully not take too long to appear.

With regard to your issues, it sounds like you have overcome them. If not, please do come back and ask any questions you may have. Although it might make it easier to find for other users if you don't ask them on this thread, but instead open a new thread for each question. I am trying to make sure our community is easily indexible and people are able to find answers to their questions in as easy as way as possible.

With regard to your issues (which I know you have solved), I'll add a link to our help page which covers the Java requirements. This is something I have requested be made more obvious on our download page.
